While working on my first WordPress site, I installed one of Rockettheme's wonderful WordPress themes and started working my way through that to style it they way I want it to appear. So, how does that work? In Joomla, there are language files in specific directories and it is quite easy to get translations or create your own. Is that the same in WordPress?
The first thing I came across was that while trying to update this site to the newest WordPress 3.1 version, it complained about the dutch language anyway. Did some quick research and found out that:
So... downloaded the newest language files here. And changed define ('WPLANG', 'nl'); to define ('WPLANG', 'nl_NL'); in the WordPress config file.
That left me with a correct newer WordPress version in Dutch.
So. That left the template specific translations.
There is a nice tutorial on Rockettheme's site for that. (select the Grunge template, and find the tutorials in the menu) So, followed that, downloaded the app Po-edit and opened the file grunge.pot from my theme directory.
I had to fill in some translator details and then was able to translate each phrase in the .pot file. Saved it in the end as nl_NL.po, uploaded it to the theme directory and tada... now I have ducth translations for the theme as well.
Now there are some WordPress specific terms that I expected to have common Dutch terms for it, so looked for some guidelines and found them here.
There are still a couple of phrases in the language file that I don't get, so maybe I need to edit it in the future, but for now.... I got an translated theme.
